SURPRISE PARADE TO HONOR OLYMPIC VIEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL AS SHE RETIRES FROM SERVING SOUTH COUNTY 35 YEARS

Students of EastLake schools surprised Olympic View Elementary School principal, Dr. Susan Mahler, with a parade to send her off to her retirement after 35 years in education in the South County.

Dr. Mahler opened Olympic View Elementary School in 1995. At that time, the school was in temporary quarters on the campus of EastLake High School while its permanent home was being built a few blocks away. Upon completion of Olympic View, a huge parade involving kindergartners through 12th graders plus parents and school staff was held to send off the Olympic View community to its new facility.

It’s been seven years and those first kindergartners are ready for promotion to middle school. After Dr. Mahler honored those first kindergartners at the promotion ceremonies, she was paraded to her home a few blocks from the school to begin her retirement.

The parade, a complete surprise to the principal, was led by the EastLake High School Band and was symbolic of what was done in 1995 when the school began.

Students, parents and staff dressed in school colors paraded with banners and community members lined the streets to watch. Celebratory banners carried in the parade by each class were staked outside Dr. Mahler’s home at the parade's conclusion.
